A Note From Dr Michele Curtis On becoming the new Chair of the Board

Dr Michele Curtis, the newly appointed Chair of the Board, reflects on her journey with St Pauls Carnival and what she hopes to achieve in her new post.

Ten years ago in 2014, I met with Dr Roy Hackett MBE at my childhood home in Easton. It was this day, I believe, that changed the trajectory of my life and career.

It was during this meeting that Roy asked me, the first time of many, to join his organisation; The Bristol West Indian Parents & Friends Association. This heritage organisation was established in 1967 following the success of the Bristol Bus Boycott and the appointment of the then new Race Relations Officer, Carmen Beckford MBE, in 1965. The Bristol West Indian Parents & Friends Association founded the St Pauls Carnival in 1968.

Two years later in 2016, I found myself sitting at the helm of the organisation as Chair. A position once held by esteemed, beloved and respected members of the community, such as the Hon. Owen Henry, Dr. Paul Stephenson MBE, Dr. Roy Hackett MBE and many more. Needless to say, I had enormous shoes to fill.

I felt honoured to be asked, let alone voted in by my peers. However, I was extremely intimidated, inexperienced and petrified. Roy, Albert Stuart and Barbara Dettering assured me they would support and guide me through the process, and I had nothing to fear.

I am beyond grateful for the precious time and wisdom I was gifted throughout the five years I served as Chair for the Bristol West Indian Parents & Friends Association. I left the organisation with many new skills including my new found confidence to which I specifically attribute to Albert Stuart.

This week, I celebrate the ten year anniversary of my Iconic Black Bristolians exhibition and my appointment as Chair to St Pauls Carnival CIC. As I reflect on my journey, I cannot ignore the fortunate stroke of serendipity. I have gone full circle, representing carnival of the past and the future. In honour of my mentors and supporters, Carmen, Roy, Albert, Barbara, Paul and the ancestors who have inspired my work and my journey so far, I want to say thank you as I welcome this new chapter with open arms.

I am excited to work with the team and board of St Pauls Carnival CIC, and continue to leave a legacy of carnival that is indicative of the vision and mission of its founders.

A carnival that is sustainable and continues to share, educate, celebrate and preserve our rich African Caribbean Heritage for future generations.

With love,

Dr. Michele Curtis
